💭 The Quick Take
Funny, flirty, emotionally warm, and unapologetically spicy — this is Lily Gold doing what she does best. A reverse harem rom-com that somehow manages to be both chaotic and comforting at the same time.
📚 Story Snapshot (Spoiler-Free)
Layla Thompson has her career sorted, but her dating life? A complete disaster. After one particularly awful experience knocks her confidence, the three men closest to her offer an unconventional solution — they’ll become her practice boyfriends.
Fake dates turn into real sparks, “lessons” blur into genuine connection, and what was meant to be temporary starts feeling dangerously real — especially when one of those men is her former professor, Luke.
What begins as confidence coaching quickly becomes something none of them planned for.
💕 My Reading Experience
📖 First Read vs Re-Read
I first read this as a paperback in 2024 and absolutely flew through it. This time, I tried the audiobook/ebook combo — and honestly? It still slaps.
Once again, Lily Gold delivered a book I couldn’t put down. I devoured it in less than 48 hours. The pacing is addictive — chapters end at exactly the right moment to make you say “okay, just one more…”
💬 The Humour
One of Lily Gold’s biggest strengths is dialogue. The banter feels natural and genuinely funny, not forced rom-com quirky. I laughed out loud multiple times.
The humour balances the spice beautifully. Just when things get intense, she’ll slip in a line that makes you grin.
🔥 The Chemistry
Let’s talk about Luke.
The older teacher trope? Absolute kryptonite for me. No notes.
His dynamic with Layla has that delicious mix of authority, softness, and vulnerability. Their chemistry feels authentic — not just physical, but emotional. The quiet moments between them hit just as hard as the spicy ones.
And while Luke is my personal favourite (I have a type and I accept it), the group dynamic works because each man feels distinct. No copy-paste personalities here.
💔 Predictability… But Make It Comforting
Yes, there’s a third-act breakup.
Yes, you know you’re getting a happily-ever-after.
But honestly? That predictability felt comforting. It’s like rewatching your favourite rom-com — you know how it ends, and that’s part of why you love it.
Instead of feeling formulaic, it felt satisfying.
❤️ Emotional Depth
What elevates this beyond just “fun and spicy” is the vulnerability. Layla’s insecurities feel real. The men aren’t just fantasy tropes — they have emotional layers and fears of their own.
The connection builds in a way that feels earned.

🎧 Audiobook Section – Narrators
Narrators: Shane East, Faye Adele, Will Watt & John York
Okay. When I saw Shane East’s name? I was immediately sold.
All four narrators did a strong job bringing the characters to life. The male narrators especially delivered the emotional beats beautifully — you could feel the tension, the longing, the vulnerability.
I do have tiny gripes:
- A few accents occasionally sounded a bit forced (even though they’re genuinely British actors).
- It would’ve been a full 5-star audio experience if each narrator voiced their character in every chapter rather than rotating POVs fully.
But overall? Still a fantastic listen.

📝 Final Thoughts + Come Chat
Lily Gold has this magical ability to make reverse harem romances feel warm rather than overwhelming. Faking with Benefits is flirty, funny, and surprisingly heartfelt.
It might not have shocked me with plot twists, but it gave me exactly what I wanted: chemistry, comfort, and a satisfying HEA.
And yes — I am immediately adding her newest release to my TBR.
